Rainforest Connection: listening for chainsaws and wildlife

⚠ Not yet claimed by the project owner or their organization. This information may not be completely accurate. Is this your project? Claim it.

Rainforest Connection, a nonprofit, places solar-powered listening devices called Guardians in forests. AI picks out the sounds of chainsaws and other threats, such as poaching, and alerts nearby rangers on their phones, and the same recordings are used to identify and track species.

Why it mattersIllegal logging is often heard long before it is seen. Turning forest sound into real-time alerts gives local guardians a chance to stop it.

What they learned

No learnings shared yet. The most useful thing on any entry is what the team tried and what happened, including what didn't work.

If you worked on this, claim the entry and add the first one.

The problem

Illegal logging and poaching in forests too remote and large to patrol.

What the AI does

Models listen to continuous audio and recognize threats such as chainsaws, and the calls of specific animals, then send alerts with the location and the audio clip.
