Electricity Maps maintains an open-source collection of programs, written with volunteer contributors, that gather electricity production, imports and exports from official sources around the world. The data shows how much carbon each region's electricity emits.

Why it mattersKnowing when and where electricity is cleanest lets people, companies and data centers shift energy use, including computing, to cleaner times and places.

What they learned

No learnings shared yet. The most useful thing on any entry is what the team tried and what happened, including what didn't work.

If you worked on this, claim the entry and add the first one.

The problem

Grid data is scattered across hundreds of official sources in different formats, which makes it hard to know how clean electricity is at a given moment.

Sources

This entry was summarized in our own words from these public sources.
