Earth Species Project: AI for understanding animal communication

⚠ Not yet claimed by the project owner or their organization. This information may not be completely accurate. Is this your project? Claim it.

Earth Species Project is a nonprofit research lab that builds AI to help people decode how animals communicate. It released NatureLM-audio, an open model for analyzing animal sounds, and works with field biologists on species such as killer whales, zebra finches and carrion crows.

Why it mattersIf people can understand more of what animals communicate, researchers can study behavior and wellbeing with less disturbance, and the public may relate to other species differently.

What they learned

No learnings shared yet. The most useful thing on any entry is what the team tried and what happened, including what didn't work.

If you worked on this, claim the entry and add the first one.

The problem

Animal sounds are hard to study at scale: recordings are long, noisy and come from many devices, and most species' calls have never been labeled.

What the AI does

Models trained on large collections of animal recordings detect, sort and describe animal sounds, which researchers then link to behavior.
