Climate TRACE: tracking greenhouse gas emissions source by source

⚠ Not yet claimed by the project owner or their organization. This information may not be completely accurate. Is this your project? Claim it.

Climate TRACE is a coalition of more than 100 nonprofits, universities and companies that estimates greenhouse gas emissions from individual power plants, factories, ships and other sources worldwide, using satellite data and AI. It publishes the data openly and, since 2025, releases monthly updates about two months behind.

Why it mattersOfficial emissions reports are slow, self-reported and often missing. Independent, facility-level data lets journalists, regulators and communities see exactly where emissions come from.

What they learned

No learnings shared yet. The most useful thing on any entry is what the team tried and what happened, including what didn't work.

If you worked on this, claim the entry and add the first one.

The problem

Countries and companies report their own emissions, often late and incomplete, so no one can check them or see where to act first.

What the AI does

Models combine images from more than 300 satellites, over 11,000 ground sensors and other data to estimate how much each source emits.
